Last scream of Allianoi

(English version below)

I have spent 10 days in Izmir (Turkey) as a participant in a European youth programme concerned with the protection of endangered cultural heritage. It was especially focused on Allianoi, an ancient thermal city which dates back to Hellenistic times, located near the city of Bergama. The place is threatened by the construction of a reservoir which would flood the whole area. It seems that Turkey has problems concerning the lack of water, and they say that the only place where they can build the dam is there. Then, the flood would be justified. After many protests from both ecologists and archeologists, Turkish authorities have proposed to set up cameras in the area so that people can visit the ruins virtually after they have been flooded. Some others propose to isolate the area and create a “dry ring” in the middle of the reservoir. Despite their efforts, as far as I know this place will definitely be flooded by March 2008. Having been there I can say that they were not some stones of no value. This is nothing but a cruel attack against historical heritage. It was sad for me to realise that some Turkish people who had fought against it had already given up on trying to recover the place.
